Getting to Know...

Gabrielle Richards

Former AIS standout and current Oregon Duck centre, Gabrielle Richards took time out of her studies to talk with ourWNBL.com about her life, the upcoming NCAA season and whatever else we could come up with. She's only been in the states since September 21, 2004, but she's been busy practicing and studying mass media, communications and business.

(ourWNBL was a fan site run by Shawn and Misch back in 2004)

First off, how have you been?

I've been great, a little cold, but great!

Did you dress up for Halloween?

No, I was the designated lollie giver-outterer. I was stationed at our front door for about three hours.....

What is the biggest cultural difference between home and the states?

The silly American money thats all the same colour.....

Have you found anything in Eugene that reminds you of Australia?

Eleanor Haring and the vegemite in our cupboard.

Which bird do you like more, the Manly Sea Eagle or the Oregon Duck?

The Oregon Duck hands down!

If you could have one aspect of another player's game, what would it be and from who?

Hang time from Jordan for sure....

If you were stranded on an island and you only had 3 luxury items with you, what would they be?

A never ending supply of vegemite on toast. My famous teddy bear Johnston... and never ending toilet paper supply

Which cartoon character are you most like?

Princess Fiona off Shrek

If you could have one thing from home in Australia that you forgot to bring to the US, what would it be?

Easy, My Family

Who's the better coach, Bev Smith or Phil Brown?

Ummmm, thats a tough question. I can't choose. They are both fantastic, they have incredible knowledge of our game and they both inspire you to push yourself and become the best that you possibily can be.

What sport have you been following back home?

The WNBL, a bit of cricket, whatever is in paper really!

What CD is in your stereo right now?

Jet - Get Born, great album.

What dimension of your game have you been working on recently?

I have been working on a fair bit recently. A lot of it has been team focused work though, learning and remembering plays and the like. Individually I have been working on my shooting, getting used to the smaller ball.

Any thoughts on the media picking the Ducks to finish 6th in the Pac-10 this season?

I don't really like to pay much attention to those sorts of things. However, I think that we have a great team this year, a team with a lot of depth and who work really hard. So i'm really excited to get into the season and just play!

How is teammate Eleanor Haring?

Eleanor is good. She has had the flu the past couple of days, but she's tough and soldiers on. It's great to have another "ossie" here. We have a lot of fun just breaking into Aussie slang around all the other girls, and they have no idea what we are talking about.

That's a tough one, I don't really have a favourite team any more, just favourite players.
